Essay writing help: the basics

You might be wondering where to start when you’ve been assigned an essay. When you have a plan in front of you with step by step instructions it makes it so much easier to get your essay written. It’s no fun to be sitting in front of the keyboard stalled because the first sentence just isn’t coming.

Writing isn’t an easy task for all students, yet almost nobody can escape the writing assignment that is bound to come. Make sure you begin right away, so you don’t run out of time; there is nothing more stressful than writing in a hurry because you’ve waited too long to get started.

Compared to other kinds of writing, an essay is a relatively small piece of text that deals with the writer’s opinion or stance on a subject. Of course, some essays require substantial research to support the writer’s claims or viewpoints.

Here are some basics to get you started writing your essay and well on your way to finishing it:

  1. Know your topic. Understand the basic points you will be presenting in your essay. It must sound like you know what you’re talking about. You don’t have to be an expert in the field, but show you’ve done your research. Stay focused on your main theme or thesis.
  2. List the important categories which you can develop into an outline. Plan out these sections very carefully. Make sure they are in some type of order; chronological for example. They should build interest and support for your main topic. This will develop the structure for your essay.
  3. Craft the body of your essay. This is done by filling in the supporting material for each of those important categories you chose in the previous step. Present the ideas briefly and succinctly at first, making sure you’re not deviating from your main point, the thesis. Carefully read through the body. Is it detailed enough? Do you need to add more explanation? More description?
  4. Write the introduction. It may seem strange to write it last, but it makes the most sense. After all, the introduction is a summary of what you are going to tell the reader in the body of the essay. It’s so much easier to summarize the body if you write it first!
  5. Proofreading and making any necessary changes and edits is always the final step. Don’t forget this step – it’s essential for crafting a great essay.
