Cell phones have become a very important part of our lives. They have in fact become an indispensable part of our lives. It can be termed as one of the most important creations of mankind which has definitely brought the world together.
How different countries see it
According to a survey by the World Bank almost three fourth of the world population has access to cell phones. Though the use is the same it is known differently in various parts of the world. In United Kingdom it is known as mobile, in USA it is known as cell phone and in Germany as handy.
In Japan people don’t take calls in public places like restaurants and cafes. If they would either silence the phone or take a very swift call if the phone rings. In fact commuters are not allowed to board the bus if they are on a call. Games, texting, mobile emails and novels are more popular in Japan as compared to voice calls.
In contrast mobiles are used everywhere in Spain and Italy. People answer calls in public places and there are no such restrictions in place unlike in Japan. Messaging under the table or discreetly texting is also a common practice in these countries. In parts of India and Africa the trend is a bit different. A person calls the number of another person and just before the other person can answer it disconnects the call. This practice is widely known in India as “Missed Call”. This way the person who missed the call can call back. A practice commonly used for saving money.
The cell phone is used differently by different sections of the society. There are those who use it just for the purpose of taking calls. These are people who do not want to fiddle much with their cell phones and just use it for the basic purpose. Then there is the other section which uses the cell phone as an iPod and yes for calling. A lot of these people are happy with a mediocre model. They just want to enjoy songs and call. The last sect of people can be termed as “Gadget Freaks”. For them the mobile is a symbol of status and their world resides in their cell phones. They would manage to do even the most basic of the tasks like, paying utility bills with the help of their phones.
